Couples planning their Kansas City weddings are stressed to the max. Public health orders, press releases and confusing interpretations are being thrown around like glow sticks during a send-off. Keeping up with them is like trying to sing along with Busta Rhymes.

That's why I decided to consolidate everything as much as possible for all the couples planning to get married in the next few months. It's important we're all compassionate and supportive of everyone with whom we interact and also make sure everyone is staying hydrated.

The orders and press releases aren't just coming out like machine-gun fire, they're also worded so confusingly that almost everyone views them differently, in their own special way.

Gold and White or Black and Blue Dress

Since ignorance of the law is no defense, here we are to offer our best understanding of the currently issued orders, releases and guidelines. Before we get started, just a few things to clear up.

1. Not Every Venue, City, County or State is Affected

Each entity is self-governed, while also following restrictions of the entity which encompasses them. The hierarchy is:

NATIONAL

governs over

STATE

governs over

COUNTY

governs over

CITY

governs over

BUSINESS

governs over themselves

If an order is issued at the NATIONAL level, each STATE , COUNTY , CITY and BUSINESS are expected to abide by it.

If an order is issued at the COUNTY level, each CITY and BUSINESS within that county are expected to abide by it.

The orders do not go the opposite direction.

If a CITY issues an order, then each BUSINESS within that CITY must abide by those orders. Businesses in neighboring cities, without any orders are not expected to abide by another city's laws.

At the same time, each private BUSINESS may enact additional rules or restrictions, as long as those additional rules and restrictions don't discriminate or violate existing laws,

So if your venue is in Kansas City, MO , it is expected to abide by any orders issued by:

  • Kansas City, MO
  • Jackson, Clay, Platte or Cass Counties (depending on the county it is in)
  • Missouri
  • United States

If your venue is in Bonner Springs, KS , it is expected to abide by any orders issued by:

  • Bonner Springs, KS
  • Wyandotte, Leavenworth or Johnson Counties
  • Kansas
  • United States

2. Press Releases, Guidelines and Official Orders are not the same thing

Some municipalities are issuing press releases before their official public health orders.

Johnson County held a meeting on Friday, November 13th, 2020 and issued an order immediately afterwards.

The city of Kansas City, Missouri held a press conference, then issued an order immediately afterwards

Jackson County issued a press release several days before issuing their actual order

Wyandotte County issued the order, but weddings have strongly encouraged guidelines as opposed to prohibitions.

3. Just Because Your Venue Isn't Affected Doesn't Mean They Won't Have Their Own Restrictions

We have seen some very health-conscious venues implement additional steps that were never enforced in their municipalities. Things like guest contact lists, temperature checks, mask mandates, isolated socializing areas, no buffets, limited guest counts, etc. Some Kansas City area wedding venues may have additional restrictions and requirements, so be sure to check with them.

Your specific venue is going to be the most knowledgeable on what orders impact them specifically and which ones don't, so definitely contact your venue for any specific questions.

And we cannot stress this enough - just because your venue isn't under any public health orders, or doesn't have additional restrictions, doesn't mean it's wise to disregard the CDC's guidelines.

As the Mississippi Free Press put it, "After big Thanksgiving Dinners, [be prepared to] plan small Christmas funerals."

For most couples we work with, this is the only time they've ever planned a wedding, so creating the best wedding reception timeline isn't something they've usually done before. If you've hired a coordinator, or a kick-ass photographer - they'll probably help build a general wedding timeline for the entire day, with a major focus on the ceremony. If you'd ask our opinion about wedding CEREMONY timelines, we'd most likely respond with Clark Gable's infamous catchphrase.

First things first, we're the realist. Not everyone wants a DJ or band at their wedding... but what's the point of getting married without music? Thus, the MP3 player wedding was borne.

Weddings are stressful. There is no question about that, but by having a wedding planner, you have an advocate working on your behalf to put out fires and get stuff done.
